Causes of female hair loss identified
Published: 8th of January 2010
Causes of female hair loss identified There are three main causes of female hair loss, medical experts have pointed out.

Dermatologist Dr Maria Colavincenzo and hair transplant surgeon Dr Robert Haber suggest that heredity, hormones and health problems are the primary culprits, the Galesburg Register-Mail reports.

As well as genetic predispositions, hormonal imbalances after childbirth, during menopause and at puberty can result in thinning locks.

Also, thyroid problems and nutritional deficiencies can have the same effect, the medics said.

It is known that protein can be important in helping to prevent hair loss, while iron and vitamins are also significant.

Meanwhile, wearing hair in braids or ponytails was also indentified as a trigger of hair loss, along with stress and rapid weight loss.

Commenting on the issue, Dr Haber said: "About 50 to 80 per cent of women will experience some hair loss in their life, although official numbers probably say it is 20 per cent."
