Women pursuing 'perfect body' at risk of hair loss?
Published: 11th of November 2009
Airbrushed images of celebrities and models in magazines contribute to eating disorders among women, it has been noted.A report on the issue has been submitted to the Committee for Advertising Practice by Dr Helga Dittmar, psychologist at the University of Sussex.
She explained that women are feeling pressure to emulate the 'ideal' look presented in the media, with eating disorders common.
Poor nutrition can lead to a wide range of health problems, with crash dieting known to contribute to hair loss as a result of a lack of protein.
And Dr Dittmar noted that the manipulation of various aspects of appearance is common in fashion advertising and "exposure to unrealistic body-perfect ideals like this in the media leads to body dissatisfaction - negative thoughts and feeling about the body" in many women.
Crash dieting was recently highlighted as a problem by fatfreefitness.co.uk, as it found that 80 per cent of females in the UK aged 25 to 45 have resorted to it in the last year, with many doing so in a bid to look "more attractive".
