Malnutrition 'a growing problem'
Published: 27th of October 2009
Millions of Britons are not getting enough protein, vitamins and minerals in their diet, it has been warned. The Daily Mail noted that malnutrition is becoming increasingly widespread, with health experts describing it as a hidden epidemic in the UK.
And consultant gastroenterologist at Southampton University Hospital Dr Mike Stroud warned that those who are suffering from the condition will need more energy and nutrients to recover from illness.
"Patients who are malnourished have 30 per cent more complications and a 40 per cent higher mortality rate," he was quoted as saying.
Other health problems that can come as a result of poor nutrition and lack of protein include hair loss, although products are available to help reduce this effect.
Earlier this month, resident GP for the BBC's One Show Dr Sarah Jarvis suggested that more information needs to be provided in order to ensure people are aware of the risks associated with malnutrition.
