Test 'predicts need' for hair loss treatment
Published: 19th of October 2009
Test `predicts need` for hair loss treatment A new test has been developed that could help predict whether hair loss treatment will be required.

According to WTVQ, HairDX aims to determine if the gene associated with male pattern baldness is present, with those testing positive having a 70 per cent chance of developing the condition.

Shelly Friedman, a US-based dermatologist, explained that a negative result also means there is a 70 per cent likelihood male pattern baldness will not be experienced.

As such, she told the news source that HairDX can enable those at risk to reduce the effects by seeking hair loss treatment early.

The American Hair Loss Association has found that two-thirds of men experience hair loss by the age of 35, while nearly 85 per cent have visibly thinning hair by age 50.

Dr Vijay Aswani of Jaslok Hospital and Research Centre's department of dermatology recently told HealthJockey that poor nutrition and drug use are among the common causes of hair loss.
